Chainstories

Chainstories is meant to create an international frame work within which children can discover what multilingualism is, what it means for their particular contexts and how they can model it to achieve their goals. Through observing the similarities and the differences within the same language family children better understand the connections between the diverse countries. This also includes a cultural component helping children acquire new information on their international partners.

Multilingualism is one of the most important tools we can make use of to enhance social inclusion and all the other aspects underlined by this dimension. Perhaps more than anybody else, the new generation ought to know how to wisely handle this tool in order to make the best of its affordances.

Creating stories is not only about writing and submitting the chapter. The activities within the project are much more complex than that. Children and the teachers coordinating the writing of the story have to take into consideration how accessible the structure and the vocabulary of the text are to the international partners who may or may not have a lot of experience with the foreign language used. This means children are not only learning about their foreign friends but they are also trying to create a story to fit their reading and understanding needs and abilities.
One of the most important features of this project is that it is not restricted to a certain category of age. The groups working on the story can either be grouped on the age criteria or they can work within mixed groups. Responsibilities can easily be shared so that each age category in the group can manage a suitable set of tasks (brainstorming ideas for the story, writing the text, editing the text, drawing and coloring illustrations for the story, making audio recordings of the text, acting the story etc.)

Another aspect of the project meant to enhance language acquisition is the use of the narrative format. This approach lowers barriers and creates a more relaxed atmosphere for the children to work in. Languages are not explicitly taught. The aim is to raise awareness on the variety of languages surrounding us. The children select and decide the vocabulary they want to use from the stories or any of the other complementary activities.

This means empowering the young generation to take action and become more responsible with building their own learning, individualizing it to their own particular needs.
